The South African Psychoanalytical Association (SAPA) is an IPA (International Psychoanalytical Association) accredited Study Group which has recently been established in South Africa. SAPA’s aim is the development of an IPA-accredited local training in psychoanalysis.
Applicants are selected for training by both the local SAPA membership as well as an IPA Sponsoring body which supports the SAPA initiative. The SAPA training includes a full personal psychoanalysis (four or five times weekly), a comprehensive theoretical curriculum on psychoanalysis, clinical seminars within a group structure and individual clinical supervision of two analytic cases. SAPA is closely linked with SAPI (South African Psychoanalytic Initiative) a broad based group of psychoanalytical psychotherapists.
SAPI membership funds and supports the SAPA initiative. SAPA members offer SAPI members monthly clinical seminars in bothJohannesburg and Cape Town as well as two annual events: an education day in Johannesburg and an annual weekend conference in Franschhoek.
