Psychoanalytic education is a process that does not stop at the end of training. For psychoanalysts, as for every profession, the formation is a permanent process that goes on for one’s whole life. Yet, in psychoanalysis the education is not only professional, but also emotional, ethical and personal -- a process of human growth and psychic maturation resulting from progression in many areas of experience.

For Candidates in training the experience of progression is tightly linked with the process of evaluation. Evaluation might be thought of as the dark, unpopular, yet necessary, side of progression, and development, maturation and growth as the sunny, positive side of it.
What to evaluate, how to evaluate, how to support development, and how to deal with progression challenges are essential issues in all psychoanalytic institutes. The processes of evaluation and progression reviews can generate fear, pain and confusion for the candidates being evaluated, as well as for those charged with this task.

The presenters will discuss elements of progression based on their papers that shared the Psychoanalytic Education Paper Prize in 2023. Their papers can be downloaded here:

 - Concluding analytic training

We will have extensive time for plenary and breakout group discussions.
